Electronic and Mechanical Bilge Pump Switches

There is some debate about which is the best type of bilge pump switch. Traditionally float switches have been by far the most common, but in recent years the electronic types have become more popular. In an older boat with dirty / oily bilges the float types are more likely to 'gum up' and stop working, so they have to be cleaned fairly regularly. The electronic ones have no moving parts to 'gum up', but of course anything electronic can fail given time so the advice is clear as with anything else, save the receipt!
